Whistle While You Work: Doing Business in the World of Whistleblowers
National Association of Women Lawyers: Fourteenth General Counsel Institute
In recent years, lawsuits and governmental actions based on reports of alleged wrongdoing by whistleblowers have been on the rise. The stakes in these cases are high with companies in a wide range of industries at risk of criminal and civil liability. In 2017 alone, the federal government recovered $3.7 billion in settlements and judgments from civil cases involving fraud and false claims. Whistleblowers, who can share up to 30 percent of any recovery, have large incentives for making these claims. This panel will discuss practical tips to help companies protect themselves from whistleblower claims as well as advice for responding to such claims.
