The attorney-client relationship is the cornerstone of our profession as attorneys.  Yet, many attorneys take it for granted.  That can lead to trouble.  Establishing well-defined expectations and parameters for the relationship is essential.  This program will discuss the attorney-client relationship and what you should know about how they are formed, what ethical duties you have once they are formed, how to end one, or how to avoid one altogether. We will discuss how attorneys can accidentally create an attorney-client relationship and what you should do to avoid such accidental representation.  In addition, we will discuss the duties and obligations of an attorney once an attorney-client relationship is formed.

 Learning Objectives:

  • Learn “best practices” for establishing an attorney-client relationship.
  • Understand the duties owed to a client and/or prospective client.
  • Identify the ethical rules related to forming and departing an attorney-client relationship
  • Obtain tips for how to avoid the “accidental” attorney-client relationship.
