Eight Attorneys Featured in January American Lawyer "Big Deals/Big Suits"
Our client, HealthSouth Corp., recently entered into a settlement with UBS Securities, LLC regarding UBS’s role in the fraud that occurred at HealthSouth during the time Richard Scrushy ran HealthSouth. Based upon the settlement, which was approved on January 13, 2009, HealthSouth will receive $100 million in cash and forgiveness of an approximately $33 million judgment in favor of UBS AG against HealthSouth in a case on appeal to the Second Circuit. All counterclaims against HealthSouth by UBS will also be dropped as part of this settlement. We are pleased to have represented HealthSouth in securing this result. As a result of the noteworthy nature of this settlement, eight of our attorneys are featured in the January American Lawyer: Big Deals/Big Suits section: Hope T. Cannon, Julia Boaz Cooper, David G. Hymer, Anne Marie Seibel, all partners in the Birmingham Office, and John Mark Goodman, Katherine Suttle Weinert, both associates in the Birmingham Office, and Daniel Kaufmann a partner in the Huntsville Office, and Michael Paul Huff an associate in the Huntsville Office. As noted in that feature, these lawyers and additional ones in our Birmingham, Jackson, and Huntsville offices are continuing to represent HealthSouth as it pursues additional defendants in the derivative action, including former HealthSouth CEO Richard Scrushy, former officers and directors of the corporation, and the corporation’s former auditors, Ernst & Young.
