Bradley Partner Bruce Ely Quoted in BBJ on Impact of Amazon Sales Tax for Alabama
Birmingham Business Journal
State and Local Tax (SALT) attorney Bruce Ely was quoted in the Birmingham Business Journal on Amazon’s decision to opt into the state’s Simplified Use Tax Remittance Program. The online retailer will begin collecting sales tax from Alabama-based purchases starting in November 2016.
“In the total universe of lost sales tax in Alabama, Amazon makes up a lion’s share of that universe, said Ely. “It’s a major share of millions of revenue dollars we’ve been losing to online. The Department of Revenue officials are pleasantly surprised at the response to this program, and I have two groups of clients: those coming in from the cold and those looking to fight it. Amazon will change some minds with that second group.”
