Bradley Partner Bruce Ely Quoted in Bloomberg BNA on Passage of Online Sales Tax Reporting Act

State and Local Tax (SALT) attorney Bruce Ely was quoted in Bloomberg BNA on an online sales tax reporting bill that was signed into law by Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley. S.B. 86 authorizes the state’s Department of Revenue to require out-of-state sellers to report sales and notify customers of their tax obligations.

The broad scope of authority the bill gives the DOR is concerning, as affected companies couldn’t know what to expect in terms of reporting frequency and other details, explained Ely. Nevertheless, the department’s rulemaking process should give members of industry a chance to give their inputon the reporting requirements, he said.
