Russ Barnwell is an associate in the Healthcare Practice Group. His areas of focus include healthcare regulatory compliance; government enforcement actions and investigations; mergers and acquisitions; and matters of corporate governance. He assists clients spanning the healthcare industry, including hospitals, health systems and other healthcare provider entities; digital health companies; and pharmaceutical and medical device manufacturers. Russ regularly helps clients navigate unchartered regulatory waters, and he has significant experience guiding clients through the data breach investigation and reporting process; billing and coding disputes; registration and licensure through government agencies; and the implementation of value-based healthcare arrangements and other innovative healthcare delivery models.

Russ began his legal career as a healthcare associate in the New York office of Ropes & Gray, but he returned to Alabama during the COVID-19 pandemic in order to found Bama Recovered—an Alabama non-profit coordinating with healthcare industry stakeholders to develop strategic public health and economic responses to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Prior to law school, Russ helped lead Alabama’s health insurance enrollment efforts following the passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. Russ graduated summa cum laude from Huntingdon College, where he was class president and coauthored a white paper outlining a medical education pipeline, which has since been implemented.
