David Stewart got his start in politics working for Senator Jeff Sessions in Washington, D.C., before attending the University of Virginia Law School. After graduating from law school in 2000, David returned home to Birmingham to join Bradley and work with Luther Strange, the current Attorney General of Alabama, in the firm’s Governmental Affairs Practice Group. He regularly represents clients before the executive and legislative branches in Washington, D.C., and Montgomery, Alabama, and also advises clients on federal and state campaign finance, lobbying and ethics laws.

Being a part of a full-service law firm with a regional and national presence is an important part of David’s practice. Governmental affairs necessarily involves numerous legal and technical disciplines. David routinely draws upon the experience of other professionals in the firm to better serve his clients. Bradley’s geographical reach is also an asset to his clients, as he is able to involve professionals within the firm who have important knowledge and experience dealing with particular government entities, officials and employees.

David has experience providing a full range of governmental affairs services for his clients, including direct and grassroots advocacy, coalition development and management and hiring and managing lobbyists across the country for clients. His for profit clients have ranged in size from privately held startups to Fortune 500 companies. He also has extensive experience representing nonprofit entities, particularly municipalities and educational institutions, providing economic development advice and assistance in seeking federal and state appropriations, grants, and other investments.

David’s other primary focus is advising clients regarding federal, state, and local campaign finance and ethics laws. He assists clients with the establishment and administration of political programs, including the formation of political action committees (PACs) and compliance with campaign finance laws. David also advises clients on how to develop effective internal programs to comply with lobbying and gift laws.
