Bradley attorney Whitt Steineker was quoted in Alabama Daily News advising retailers to make decisions based on the new state law in Alabama, effective Jan. 1, that regulates consumable hemp products.

“They have to run their own calculus about the likelihood that the federal law will stay the same and take effect (next November,)” said Steineker, founder and co-chair of Bradley’s Cannabis Industry team.

Unless the federal law is amended or continued, it will take effect on Nov. 13, 2026. Steineker and others expect a major push to get it modified between now and then.

Steineker added there are growers in Alabama raising hemp for consumable purposes, while others grow what will become products like textiles and paper.

“The people who are growing the CBD-style plant are going to be immediately impacted (by the federal ban) and they’ve got to make a huge decision, probably by the spring, if they think there is going to be a change to federal law or they need to start planting soybeans or some other alternative.”
