Hillary Campbell and Lauren Smyth Quoted in Law360 on Gen Z Women Redefining Success in Law

Bradley attorneys Hillary Campbell and Lauren Smyth were quoted in Law360 in an article examining how Gen Z women attorneys are increasingly unwilling to define success solely through BigLaw prestige, high compensation or partnership.
Campbell points out that young women may still aspire to BigLaw partnership, but they want the ability to determine when and how they pursue it.
“That may mean having a family before making partner or after,” Campbell said. “But they’re really wanting that flexibility, wanting work-life balance and making it work within the framework of the goals they’re trying to reach.”
Smyth takes the idea further, emphasizing how the pandemic changed attorneys’ expectations about where and how they work.
“In the wake of COVID, you don’t have to be in a big city in order to be successful,” said Smyth. “What we’re seeing is more of a lifestyle preference versus just a predominantly career-driven decision.”
The future of women’s advancement in law may depend less on convincing women to adapt to traditional career structures and more on making those structures adaptable to women’s lives.
