Brett Lawrence is an associate in the Banking and Financial Services Practice Group who primarily focuses his practice on data privacy and cybersecurity issues and mortgage servicing, as well as insurance coverage and other general and professional liability matters. He is a Certified Information Privacy Professional (CIPP/US) by the International Association of Privacy Professionals and has considerable experience assisting clients with compliance needs, including the CCPA, CPRA, GDPR, FERPA, HIPAA, COPPA, and other state and federal privacy laws. His experience also includes drafting consumer-facing privacy policies, internal privacy policies and procedures, and assisting clients in the event of a data breach.

Brett has assisted clients with a variety of software and technology transactions, including Software as a Service (SaaS) agreements, master services agreements, and vendor agreements requiring unique data protection provisions and addendums (DPAs). He frequently negotiates and drafts contracts such as non-disclosure agreements (NDAs), US- and EU-specific DPAs, service and subcontracting agreements, and software reseller agreements.

Prior to joining the firm, Brett clerked for the Hon. Lucy Inman of the North Carolina Court of Appeals in Raleigh, North Carolina, and interned for the Hon. Loren A. Smith of the U.S. Court of Federal Claims in Washington, D.C.

Brett received his J.D. from Washington and Lee University School of Law, where he was managing editor of the Washington and Lee Law Review. Brett grew up in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and graduated from Florida Atlantic University, majoring in finance.
